【Podcast】EP40|放棄中國市場,反而世界巡迴賣超多票!因為嗆BBC而爆紅,嗆不夠再開砲地獄廚房戈登 – Uncle Roger (Nigel Ng) @mrnigelng
I don't know a single person who watches. Taiwanese TV what's your what's your. biggest show oh I know I know I know I. know what's that the the boy band the. four guys who made yes yes yes who none. of them can act you know what's that. show called yeah none of them can act. they have no expression but everybody in. Malaysia was watching it yeah they were. so big stupid haircuts flaing around. it's the classic it's a classic. Rua even black pink gets canceled by ch.
you know exactly like you say you're. you're going to Rua eventually right so. why not go out in the biggest bag. possible and I had a special to sell at. at the time that that clip went super. viral yeah all my Billy Billy way Shu. got got banned but it's all right it's. all right stole a lot of the special got. aot big fan decent Siz fan base in. Taiwan you know so appreciate you. guys say Julie check out my beautiful. ring from kjc jewelry so with the.
kjc. jewelry. suit t-shirt.
kjc jewelry.
kjc. jewelry with kjc. jewelry instram kjc. [Music]. jewelry welcome back to picky for Show's. podcast today we're having the one and. only uncle Roger.
Nigel Peggy no thank you thank you thank. you thank you this is literally the. first time that I got the notification. the day before filming and I just. messaged him yesterday say hey emergency. do you have time tomorrow we need to be. at the studio I thought you guys you're. you're the same uh building as uh Ken. and Kylie so I thought oh they would. they probably fil together right so I.
just thought it would be easy sorry. right right no no no problem I'm really. happy I'm more than happy to we just. have different team we're neighbors but. yeah yeah this building by the way. listeners bit of a hole this buing. that's how we it's like be in cagn you. know every Taiwanese horror film or. Korean horror film the electricity goes. out and you see the wall just tiles and. blood on the tiles they filmed it here. all of those for sure but you really got. to stop saying that cuz my mom's really. worried.
she she's always worried if I'm safe. here she's like you're not not she's not. safe cuz sometimes that I film here on. my own and by the end of like when. everything's done once I walked out it's. all dark I'm the only person on this. whole floor it's really really scary. yeah so how many days have you been here. three days how do you like it so far. it's good it's good TI p is good it's. like a less clean more fun version of. Tokyo less clean I like I like how you.
put it yeah you don't even be too clean. Tokyo is too clean it's like it worries. me yeah right what do you think about. the people nice have you get uh. recognized yet on the street a few times. a few times how do people say hi to you. or do they say ask for photos right. okay right right in Mandarin uh. sometimes sometimes English uhhuh. sometimes they like are you Uncle Roger. oh I did something dumb actually I I. didn't know I was going to be so. recognized here mhm M so in my hotel.
when will this come out this won't come. out before I leave right right right all. right it be after okay so I'm staying at. the episode Tan in taipe they have a. record player in the in the room I was. like oh this is cool let me film an. insta story and then I'll say oh thank. you episode tan so now everybody knows. where I'm staying based on the Instagram. story so every time I go back there's. like one or two you know and I can tell. they're my fans they're my fans just. standing waiting outside the building I. can tell they're my fans because I got a. lot of very weebie nerdy fans I love you.
all but you know who you are right. YouTube fandom is a very kind of shy. nice guy a bit geeky type of fandom who. are great people but I can I can tell. them from a mile away okay you're. waiting for me to show up so and how do. you usually react do you just walk by. and then see whether they come up to you. or you'll just stop and see what they. say no I just walk by I'm not going to. be like hey do you want a photo that's. very what what what what you call it. arrogant right you want a photo let's do.
a photo you know no they ask maybe. they're shy no no they got to ask for it. man I can't be like that would be crazy. imagine if they imagine if they didn't. know who I was exactly exactly I'll be. like do you want a photo they' be like. what who the are you right right. that's how I always feel cuz sometimes I. can really tell that they kind of want. to talk to you but they're not sure but. I'll just stand there and wait for them. to either come but I would never ask. them whether you want a photo or not you. get recognized a lot on the street too a. good amount sometimes sometimes.
sometimes are they mostly women men I. would say half half half half more women. yeah okay mine's mostly men mostly dudes. YouTube is a very typ dudes nice dudes. you know little little little shy nerdy. dudes you know and they're nice uh but. for you maybe well you came from the TV. world right so maybe not exactly I'm. trying no no from YouTube actually. really okay tell us I don't know much. about you apart from we just had lunch. with Kylie and Ken mhm I'll call myself. content creator okay but just there's a.
show um owned by my previous agency so. that my boss can just put me in that. show oh yeah so I'm just one of the. talents but it's not really like I'm. what kind of show is that more like a. talk show okay shiny floor you know no. no no no shiny floor is one of those. weird I grew up watching these Taiwanese. game shows where they eat like spicy. food and that kind of thing no they kind. of just talk different gossip and.
stories about their um okay no no I'm. not going to do them but yeah stories. okay okay so like a pocast but. worse that's not from me you're not with. them anywhere you're not with them any. anymore you can you can shoot on them. come. on let's talk about. you so did you fly in with direct flight. no no no hope F from I was in India. before this oh so I was on tour uh flew. from Delhi Bangkok bang to that's what I.
was about to ask you like when you're. picking we to have flovers do you try to. avoid Hong Kong oh I think I have to. yeah yeah have to avoid Hong Kong avoid. China so I flew well before this I flew. to Malaysia from La I live in LA now I. was in Malaysia for my restaurant. opening so I flew it was China Airlines. right but I was like oh we which which. China right I got I got to Google so. China Airlines is the The Good China the. TS MC China the Democratic oh well well.
like no no the free China you know the. part of the part of. China C cancel her okay she has no TV. job anymore Taiwanese TV I've never seen. a single I don't know a single person. who watches Taiwanese TV what's your. what's your biggest show that you have. as an export that that I would know do. you know K I thought that was a no that. that's kind of like a popular one back. then and I only know squid games that is.
ah so you don't know any Taiwanese show. when I was a kid maybe I've seen a few. mm you know what what's the kiila that's. the biggest one yeah it was TV show but. if we're talking I I know I know I know. what's that the the boy band the four. guys who made yes yes yes who none of. them can act you know none of them can. act What's that show called um yeah none. of them can act they have no expression. but everybody in Malaysia was watching. it yeah they were so big and like the pH.
stupid haircuts like what anime boy. haircuts yeah what are they doing now. what are these guys doing now do you do. you get to meet them no no I never get. to meet them I think actually I don't. know are they still in the entertainment. go we should Google that I don't think I. think maybe some of them got married but. I just never seen them right they're not. in the industry anymore maybe they made. a enough of money yeah they they just. retire in taong or something. right is where you you're from right.
right I'm from taone I'm from taone so. um for some of the audience who may not. be familiar with what you've been. through MH so they might be curious um. why do you have to avoid the layovers in. Hong Kong could you tell us a little bit. about why do you have to avoid those. places it's the classic it's a classic. Rua you know and as a comedian and I. talk about Asian culture you have to. touch China right you have to talk about.
China it be too a little bit too. disingenuous if I talk about all Asian. things but just skip over China you know. right um so I I got I got to this China. drama twice actually the first time uh. it was Mike Chen Mike Chen correct. correct correct Fon Kong guy nothing. nothing against that guy but I just knew. him as a food vlogger I did a video with. him suddenly I'm in this trouble I don't. even know why I I I was just I just got. known at the time I was new to social. media I didn't know I know China has.
some has some drama surrounding it but I. don't know exactly why and now I was. getting canceled I don't even know why I. was like oh why why am I getting cancel. and my Chinese social media team at the. time they were like oh this is he's part. of the funo it's a no big no no and my. social Chinese social media team at that. time was based in Beijing Chinese. Chinese Chinese team so it's I was like. okay what what do you think we should do. because I just started my way in Billy. Billy right and do you still have W all. gone s home Su all gone so I as what. what do you do and and they said oh no.
wor we'll handle it we'll just post a. statement for you and everything will be. fine okay okay handle it that's what. they do for all the actors actresses. when they have um sensitive problems. like this yeah it's the same statement. copy and pasted by the way if you talk. about this will you got canceled by. China do you want to go to China ever I. care I say things like that all the time. so I don't care okay okay good good so. they posted a statement and I thought oh. everybody will know it's a copy and. paste statement right but the West does. doesn't know so somebody on Twitter.
screenshotted that statement and put it. on Twitter now it looks like I'm I'm. apologizing and cow Towing to China. kissing China's ass yeah I'm like bro. I I I I'm sure it was my mistake for not. knowing the political landscape but come. on I'm only human right I didn't never. lived in China before I've only been to. China once for like a week you know so I. don't know exactly what the dynamic is. but then now the whole for that two. weeks the whole of the western world I. felt it felt like the whole of the. Western World hated me um and when that.
cancellation was happening I I came back. from the UK to Malaysia I was. quarantining in the hotel room by myself. you have to quarantine for two weeks. that's March that's like January of 2020. I came back. okay January. 2021 yeah we still remember the day yeah. yeah roughly so I was in a hotel room by. myself for two weeks with nothing but. the internet and the internet was every. two seconds it's just hate comment hate. comment hate comment did at some point. turn off the notification notifications.
have always been off but you sometimes. you can't help it you because just what. else you do in a hotel room by yourself. I had no family at the time nobody could. visit you no friend could come see you. you're just stuck in a hotel room for 10. days so yeah it was was pretty miserable. but then I I left my covid quarantine. finished I left the hotel room that's. was good nobody cared right you know so. the internet warps your perspective you. know most people still like you right. right and this happened if I'm not wrong. um I think that's four months after that.
BBC Fried Rice video went off oh I was. so scared I thought this oh career's. over done when it's finally up and then. F going down again thankfully uh I think. people either they understood the real. fans who are from here they. understood even black pin gets canceled. by China you know exactly it's I really. like what you said um I forgot which. podcast you were on and you mentioned. this you said you saw one of the um. anti-chinese or.
anti-ccp group in Taiwan say you will. eventually Rua in her life once in her. life everyone's going to go through that. and it is true we say that a lot you did. your research nice nice yeah um but but. the the West they they don't understand. the whole dynamic right so they take it. at face value they think oh he he must. love China I think this guy's Pro China. and then Pro China automatically means. you're Pro genocide you're Pro sang. concentration like w it's just video. that I took down ill advisedly took down.
but you know uh but you learn from your. mistakes so now and and then uh the. second China drama was you know that. that that type Taiwan joke Taiwan ah the. one that I shared yesterday right right. yeah yeah which I love you know I love. it I love it so much thank you thank you. I I O over my tour I started doing that. joke it improvised a little bit about. China and it became this big routine and. I thought this is funny and because I. learned a lot from that that whole. experience I can you know talk about it.
with some Authority and like you say. you're you're going to Rua eventually. right so why not go out in the biggest. bang possible right and I had a special. to sell at at the time that that clip. went super viral yeah all my Billy Billy. way Shu got got banned but it's all. right it's all right sold a lot of the. special got aot big fan decent Siz fan. base in Taiwan now you know that video. went so well in Taiwan like people are. sending it sharing it yes and even.
people um translate it into Mandarin so. for people who don't speak English they. can understand oh nice but it's you know. to to me it's it's simple jokes that we. all joke about day to day right and we. don't even find it offended at all like. I think most Chinese Chinese people. don't find it offensive either really I. think they find it funny I think they. all well that's my hunch is you know. politically yeah they they I think it's. it's the higher up and the politicians. who are more sensitive right regular.
Chinese people are like yeah it's funny. we we laugh at ourselves too also this. group of um self and yes ah you know. this word already who told you that army. or something did you learn it from them. when I was cancelled yeah I had nothing. to do but Google I Google F oh I. watched so many YouTube videos on and I. still don't know what they do me either. actually sort of religion some sort of. some people say it's a some people. allegedly say it's a cult some people. say it's a religion and they so many. media like yeah Shen Shen do they have.
shenyun here I'm not sure but I know. they. have new Tong Dynasty ND the the news. newspaper outet like they report news. and of course it's all anti-ccp yeah. it's it's crazy the rabbit hole goes. deep man and they they own newspapers. and then they they would have. demonstrations in London Chinatown or. any Chinatown in the world they would be. like oh organ harvesting and nobody. knows if it's real or fake and and it's. all very murky I have done all this. research and I still don't know so even.
here in Taiwan right in front of taipe. 101 you'll see f gondo um they have the. flag and with um some poster yeah I. think I need to join the Fon Kong you. know to Uncle Roger joins F that's my. next YouTube video that's how you're. going to promote your next special yeah. yeah yeah I'll be Pro China the next. special just just just you wait so um. this time on your tour you only goes to. um Deli. yeah yeah also Dubai and taipe yeah so.
how do you pick these three places. there's the places I didn't get to I. it's still part of the same tour and. then I got to play these places last. time because my schedule was two packed. I was supposed to come to taipe. 2022 but you know at that time when I. landed here I need I needed to get a. covid test right and if I test positive. they automatically quarantine you for. two weeks which would mess up my the. rest of my tour plans so I I just. couldn't risk it that's why I had to. cancel gotcha when was your last special.
that was last year right uh last year. but don't don't don't go don't go watch. it because there's some same M some of. the same material in this this if you're. coming to the live show I am you are. okay don't don't don't go watch okay. okay but I don't think you can actually. I don't think I can watch it anywhere. anyway I I'm going to going to. eventually put the whole special up on. YouTube so just just I mean come see the. live show it be a better experience yeah. of course and you can feel the vibe also. how you interact so do you have um. Chinese agent dealing with your anything.
no no it's all gone now I do have a. YouTube channel with my videos but with. Chinese subtitles on it oh who's doing. all the subtitles for you it's a company. in Singapore yeah but I'm trying to do. dubbing now I'm looking for you know. hopefully Kylie and them can help me out. but um you know on YouTube now you can. have multiple audio tracks for a video. right right so I want one of the audio. tracks to be like Mand Uncle Roger as a.
Chinese voice actor or Taiwanese doesn't. matter just Mand language huh that's. pretty cool aren't you worried that it. might kind of um change how you express. the joke or how you tell the joke when. it's another person trying to do it will. but I think the people who will watch. the mandrin dub they wouldn't watch the. English version anyway so it's a new. audience so if the video is a little bit. shittier but it's a new audience okay. fine fine I can't control everything you.
know at least you can um get to expose. to more people yeah expose more people. and then hopefully when I open a. restaurant here in taipe they come come. visit and eat eat there yeah so that you. mentioned you moved to LA now yeah and a. few years ago last year I moved to LA. what was the reason what made you move. to LA work yeah YouTube was just I was. in London before that well work and food. really have you been to London before no. oh London it's not good don't go it's.
it's what what is it about what's about. it that you think is not good it there. are very very good restaurants there MH. but because there's so few of them the. that you have to make a reservation two. weeks in advance there some restaurants. like a good pasta place I go to if I. don't make a reservation I go there on. Saturday 7 p.m. say hey can I get a. table for four people they just laugh in. your face like what the are you. talking about no way no way and they. don't you can't even bribe them you know. in the US you can slip them 100 oh.
really yeah some I don't I don't do it. I'm not bothered like that but i' I've. heard and seen people do it m but in the. UK they just don't give a they're. just like nah nah sorry it's full book. we have a spot open Thursday three weeks. from now so you know and even with my. connections as Uncle Roger sometimes I. still have a hard time just just getting. into restaurants so so hey on where. where do you have your restaurant now. Malaysia qu. okay yeah what's the name up the. restaurant it's called fuo it's Uncle.
Roger oh okay so make sure you guys. visit next time when you're visiting. yeah come to Malaysia we nice too oh I. know Magi oh Sama Sama yeah that's the. only I can say good where' you learned. that um on the trip like the tour guy. told us like how to speak yeah come to. Malaysia Duran's better than your stinky. tofu. okay it's true I don't make the rules. I'm not gonna fight for that but yeah I. love both but yeah Duran is really good.
it's better stingy tofu is have you. tried in Taiwan yeah at a r out at a r. to bushing oh you have to actually go to. a to place okay I'll tell them we'll go. tonight so they up people who. brought me to a ro to try to no nobody. goes to ro and eat to right yeah well. the whole Ro smells like toou you walk. in there like what is this fish sauce. smelling thing do you have the Steed one. or the fried one steamed one that's the.
reason you need to have the fried one oh. okay you didn't get to have the proper. one all right yeah bring me somewhere. mhm H have it again and then we'll see. do you have uh the same comments on I. might change my mind okay we'll see. we'll see hopefully hopefully um so what. do you think is the different the. biggest difference living in London and. La besides food besides food weather man. the weather is so good in. La sunny. it's sunny and what else is I just like.
there's more space there's more nature. and I like driving in London taking the. the the MRT you know what you call the. MRT here taking the MRT in London is. quicker than driving so everybody I'm. forced to take the the tube that's what. we call it in London and it's just so. annoying because it's packed it's it's. too warm it's dirty you know in La. everybody needs a car if you walk around. you look homeless in LA right you look. like a hom only homeless people walk.
walk seriously yeah and then I didn't. know that I was the first time I visited. LA from London I just like oh on Google. Maps it's a 15 minute walk let me just. walk and it's just yeah nobody does that. we do it in taipe if it's just 15. minutes we we might walk yeah but in La. it's not the same you have to walk. through you know unsafe Street every. other street is sketchy looking there's. people camped outside La is not a place. to go be a tourist at because it's it's. ugly it's it smells it is the touristy. areas especially but it's a decent place.
to live you know the weather is good the. food is good oh how about the people the. people people are weird it's La people. come on they're all vegans and you know. they don't drink they don't they don't. and there a problem you go to a party. they don't they don't drink they. remember everything you. say uh weed a lot of weed weed is boring. come on no it's not nobody's interesting. when they're on weed no when they're. high on on on on Marana that's the whole. thing people are not interesting but.
after you smoke everything becomes more. interesting yeah but that's that's then. smoke at home you know if everything's. interesting just stay at home and just. smoke and watch watch SpongeBob you know. just just stay at home don't come to a. party and I'm trying to socialize when. to talk and yeah yeah yeah yeah. yeah and I think one thing that you said. everybody remembers what you said. because when you're drunk people will. just forget about it the next day just. go oh he's drunk we're all up we. say crazy but there they're like. it's like it's like it's like partying.
with a surveillance camera you know just. downloading everything and then. reporting on you yeah no no no and then. it's a very healthy lifestyle which I. appreciate you know people in La I don't. do this but people in la love to go. hiking and Hiking is just walking right. they they'll drive to a hill right and. they'll get out the car walk up the hill. walk back down the hill get back in the. car that's that's their that just a. hobby you know yeah okay how about have. you ever been to Colorado uh I think I.
drove I saw the rock drove past the. Rockies one time if you ever get a. chance try hike there okay that that I. understand that's a different hike. that's pretty and like you know proper. mountains yes yes exactly it's a hill. bro it's. like just not even in the mountains no. no okay Mountain maybe some people do do. it but I think you need to at least be a. bit athletic to actually hike up a. mountain but in La I don't do the hiking. you know I I don't like the sun too.
much I like it sunny but I like to be. indoors and see the outside you know. it's not it's not good for your skin and. after being in Taipei for a few days I. realized I need to work on my skin a bit. because I look very old here in Taipei. no you don't no oh thank you but in. America I look young I look my age or. younger people are surprised when I say. I'm 33 people over here people are. surprised when I say 33 too because. they're Oh I thought you were 40 you. know no way who did that more than one. person I think they're just. no no it's okay I love I love the Asian.
honesty because who else is going to. tell you have a receding hairline you. know apart from an Asian Asian Barber. old people Asian hair salon yes yeah all. the grandma uncles that's why I caught. it early and I take the pill and I get a. hair transplant all that stuff because. there was one one she uh uh uh one son. of a Asian hair stylist who told. me oh you're receiving hairlines getting. worse and then she she compared me to T.
way oh no I okay I got to got to fix I. got to fix my hair man I got to fix this. this was in London too so if you want to. you know you want an honest opinion on. what you should fix about your body just. go to an Asian hair salon in the western. world and they'll tell you everything do. your parents do that to you too like. judge about your appearance judge about. everything too skinny getting fat. pimples everything I I like that people. won't tell you they'll just be like.
oh no no no you look good you look good. and then they'll talk about it. behind your back right have you seen her. you got so much you gain so much weight. but then in in in person no you you look. amazing you look cute you're fine so I. never trust advice from a aesthetic. advice from from white people yeah I. trust it from an Asian person do you. have any white then I got a few I got a. few you know I think it's easier to make. Asian friends to be honest why because. of the culture yeah yeah culture a lot.
of things you don't have to explain you. just be like you want to get you want to. get uh like bingu okay white people you. want to get Bing Su what is it. oh you know right and I think yeah. that's a really interesting thing. because um from your video of Uncle. Roger that's that's really weird because. you're actually from Malaysia I grew up. here in Taiwan but all those stereotype. things are things that I can totally. relate no matter the light color Polo. cuz that's also what my Dad wears um.
also case yes yes and um those noises. they make like oh. yeah of course we don't say it this way. not exactly the same but we totally get. it yeah yeah yeah I know it's it's it's. it's great I love I love playing this. character it's so relatable to the whole. world I I think even if say you're a. white person you still have like a. relative like that this kind of. talking relative uh one criticism I get.
from the West is sometimes they think oh. you're just allowing people to make fun. of an Asian accent and it's they just. don't get it you know we grew up like. this I grew up speaking with a with a. stronger accent right now I speak like. this there's a slight asan tinge to it. to my accent but growing up it was a. little stronger more closer to Uncle. Roger MH and then they're like oh you. doing an accent it's bad like why is it. bad everybody in Malaysia speaks like. what you think we all sound American. back back in Malaysia. right and and yeah I think sometimes.
it's hard to explain but hopefully with. enough time they'll see that the accent. is just part of uh part of how we live. right and my videos Elevate Asian. Cuisine Asian culture and all that stuff. so hopefully they see that one day also. my point of view is I rather it's an. Asian person doing that instead of them. doing it have you ever seen Family Guy. that's stupid reporter but is actually a. white people trying to do Asian accent. Jes exactly or like in um The Simpsons.
AB exactly like they're all making this. weird accent like nobody speaks like. that like stop it it's stupid it's not. accurate mhm you know exactly it's like. when when they when people not in the. culture uh try to do the ACC and stuff. they they take the surface level jokes. but with us we have like you know a lot. of Asian families have two kitchens a. dry kitchen a wet kitchen that kind of. observation shows that I've lived that. life right and also people people do. other accents they don't get on you.
know Russians do Russian accent jokes. you know people love it Irish person. does Irish Irish mom people love it but. I think sometimes it's Asians in the. west who grew up in the west maybe they. they got bullied when they're growing up. so they have that kind of they get. triggered sometimes when they hear an. Asian accent and somebody like doing it. voluntarily have you ever got bullied. because that you're Asian in us well I I. grew up in Malaysia really so when I got. bullied it's not because I was Asian. it's because I I wore glasses that's.
what do they call. it four eyes yeah. yeah okay yeah we just kids just kids. are cruel you know kids will pick. anything to bully you about so the. Asians who got bullied in in the west. they got bullied because not because of. their race but because they are the only. one of their race you know what I mean. if they were in Asia they would get. bullied too just something else too tall. Too Short you know too much hair right. right yeah too skinny too fat. nerdy yeah true true I think we need to.
bring bullying back into the schools. here no people still get bullied here I. think they do and it gets worse these. days but it gets really violent oh okay. okay violence okay that's too much. that's that's actually what uh we're. talking about that you're going to. mention in your um special about new. type there's some incidents on the news. that high school students kill each. other. they brought knife to the school and.
then yeah they bullied that person and. just killed killed I know let just talk. guys what happened to just talking. what new taipe I'll avoid that place a. lot of. ganger okay. I'll yeah but that's what people all. know a lot of gangsters are there so. kids are kind of also kind what are your. gangsters like here here is it like. Yakuza Vibes tattoos and all that stuff.
tattoos do you know Beetle nuts Beetle. nuts M you'll see a lot of them chewing. Beetle nuts it's a kind of plan that. they chew and make their teeth all red. and they'll just spit it on the street. uh I've I've I've seen that somewhere in. Asia I think we have that we have that. too if you go walk around those area you. might see some red spots on the street. by Malaysia the people who chew those. are just old middleaged old aunties or. uncles they're not gangsters they're. just random random moms just just it's.
just a snack for them Beetle nuts yeah. yeah they just chew it and they're they. the teeth turn red I think I think I. haven't seen it in a while not a. gangster thing I might have growing up I. don't remember now I've heard that it. really burns your um maybe I talking. about something different teeth or. something yeah yeah I think it's. probably different. yeah that's a weird thing it is a. gangster what do you do I chew fruit you. know. and when they spit it's like they're. spitting blood oh yeah trying too hard.
man just be a g we we get it just just. get a gun or something you don't have to. chew this red thing they kind of do. always in Black BMW or C300 Mercedes how. do you know so much are you dating one. no that's. stereotype oh I need to know this I need. to know this for the show so what BM. black BMW or Mercedes 3. C300 meres C300 those are nice cars. though yeah no Porsche Porsches for them.
oh and. uh alart the Toyota yes Al yeah so. that's how some girls high school girls. or some gangster girls I don't know how. do you even call them those girls who. don't have a lot of education but I'll. always stick with um the gangster. they'll just get a car like this and. drive them around to get those um luxury. like designer bags it's not a bad life. really no I would love to be driven. around in alart and eat that red fruit.
so that's what that's kind of like a. stereotype when you're on the street and. if there's a alart you just never honk. at them don't try to mess with those. cars oh black alart only or all colors I. think white black black right yeah okay. good to know good to know that's a. stereotype of these gangster okay and. they're all in new type in taong in. ta taong too yeah my home um home City. okay what's what's other other places. tan is that a place yeah Tan's a place.
what's what's the reputation there. everything they eat is super sweet like. extra sweet they just put a lot of sugar. in food for some reason like lovan you. ate right if you eat Lan in Thailand. it's sweet everything is sweet weird it. is yeah you guys put too much in. your tea by the way that's like Boba. yeah Boba is like a must in everything. here apparently Boba is like staple and. then you put there jelly. you put Boba you put jelly tapioca the.
square pillows also tarot balls sweet. potato. balls what else do we have relax all. kinds of stuff let me just drink my. liquids gu so tired chewing this whole. what did you just get I just got uh what. what chingen. something just tea only only tea right. no B uhhuh it's too it's too much. chewing man this culture that's our Al. that's like basic a lot of them. especially those office workers students.
usually they'll all order together I see. I see that's too much you can't do every. day for live here it's kind of just like. people get coffee every day that's the. same thing we just order teas every day. so if you on Boba and Junu you guys. are so proud of your Junu yeah you know. sorry to break it to you it tastes the. same everywhere else they perfect no it. doesn't it taste better here no no it's. the same it's the same I I we can do a. blind taste test Taiwan tunu versus. someone from like what knowu whatever T.
okay we can yeah we can actually do that. mhm you should do do it for your show I. guarantee you you can't taste the. difference weird patriotism just yeah is. the. best even okay so that's that's the. thing every Boba plays their tea kind of. different their Boba tastes different. for us so there will be um this Boba. plays which is um known for the tea. known for this so they all have like. their signature okay okay I will I will.
work on that maybe I'll I'll grow that. pallet and you know hope. hopefully the BBC fried rice one was. that your first video that went viral. yeah yeah how about I think there was. another one that's really interesting um. that was when you were doing how normal. people talk on the phone and then how. Asian about that video on the long time. ago that was a really good one oh really. that's also how my parents they turn on. the speaker yeah there's there's no. silent they don't know there's a silent.
button on the phone beep beep and then. the text is like magnified to 500% so. each screen is just two words you know. even on MRT you'll see a lot of old. people turning on the speaker having the. music super loud yeah music loud be be. be you hear every. single it rings why what do you say way. way way ni way and they go to a. restaurant and they like turning on the. flashlight to look at the menu oh boy.
it's too much so every time when you. have a video that went really really. well does it worried you that this will. be the last really good one where does. it occur to you that oh can I make a. better. one uh to to Top This no no I I I I. don't worry about that that much anymore. and you can't keep thinking oh I'm gonna. make a better one to top this because. you're gonna just it gets harder and. harder and harder right so I I just try.
my best with every video every video I. put out I make sure it's entertaining. for me and for my audience that's all I. can hope for really if it goes viral. great if it doesn't that's fine but I. think for now having a solid you know. fan base who just watches your video. every time is more important than having. something pop really hard right. especially with this algorithmic era and. with do you have Tik Tok here yeah like. like throwing what whatever know it. right there's so many things that just. blow up but then the people don't know.
who they are still the creators they. still nameless creators just blow up but. then you get you see that video feed. it's like 5 million views and the next. one 20 views 200 views exactly so that. is you know sure take the viral ones but. also having but having the more solid. consistent fan base that's more. important returning viewers do you check. the data. frequently uh sometimes the data can. only tell you so much M but yeah you can. you learn a bit from it say okay people.
like this people don't like this but I. think a lot of the times it's still. Instinct right do you check your data a. lot do you and it informs your content M. like like what what's an example tell. tell me uh so I'll see um how many. return audience or how many followers. are watching or the non-followers so. when I see a lot a big percentage of. non-followers I know this video went. really well and it kind of um goes to. people who don't already follow you yeah.
that's very easy to tell when you have. when it's going out to people who don't. follow you because that's when you start. getting the hate comments exactly that's. actually how I tell whenever there's. only the positive comments and like oh. Peggy this is so funny this is something. I know okay this video hasn't gone that. when there's positive comments I get S. I'm like oh it's not going viral then. when the hate comments com like. yeah that's good right people you know. that's how I know that it reached it uh. it reached out to um not my target. audience yeah but you need thick skin.
for that though M and in the west. everybody has depression anxiety they. can't handle it but in Asia we have. built we've sustained this abuse the. whole time up with tough parents tough. teachers our parents abused us of. teachers whipped us and caned us do they. still beat their kids here in taipe in. Taiwan when I grow up yes when when I. was growing up I got my haircut in front. of the whole school because it was too. long seriously yeah yeah I went to a. dong so it's like stricter you know I.
did a Taiwanese syllabus too no Malaysia. is so I learn all about the guing all. that oh really yeah you guys were. the losers in the war and then you just. started your own thing you. know well yeah sucks I know yeah yeah. but but I I I just learned uh we were. abused by everyone so we have I have. thick skin now you know so and then. dealing with the cancellation I think. someone without my resilience would have. crumbled a lot more you know but I got. out of it you know we learn it and.
nothing affects us really so the Asian. upbringing is good so I think if I ever. have a kid I probably have to abuse him. a little bit just kind of yeah that's. actually what I want want to ask you CU. I remember that you mentioned I think. that was when you were talking with. Jimmy Jimmy oou so you mentioned that um. if you if one day you have kids you want. to send the kid back to Asia that could. that could be good actually think about. that yeah why not why not you know I'll. spend time with them but you know I'll.
FaceTime them once a week you're not. going to fly back with them you're just. going to send them back to your your. parents well it depends it depends where. my work is ideally I spend time a lot of. time with them but I also need to work. to provide and my my work takes me all. over the world you know restaurant. opening and I think when they're I don't. know why I'm talking about this like I. have kids now but I think when they're. younger maybe it's a little easier to. just go place to place but when they're. in school you can just bring them up. bring them out with you to fly somewhere. you don't want to homeschool them.
because homeschool people are weird I. never met a single except for this guy. called his name is cooking with Ken he's. a food Creator great chef he is fine. because he has a lot of friends he's. been on the internet and been with. people collabing so he knows how to. socialize but most homeschooled people. are weird man you mentioned that you've. once pissed a an actor once I pissed an. actor of right do you remember what was. that yeah man you did your research but. you watched videos from like 3 years ago. okay okay oh I I remember now I used to.
have a podcast and uh okay actor is a. whole different breed man it's like oh. boy they. so I I've you know I know actors I've. taken acting classes I know I know I. have friends who are actors and they're. just very they're very sensitive man. they take themselves very seriously you. know and I'm a comic so we are the. opposite of that we have no sincerity we. don't really compliment people we. on people right right but actors are. also positive and I take acting classes. they're all so.
positive and kudos to them in La the. acting classes everybody in there they. are amazing actors all unemployed but. they're amazing and great skill at what. they do but and then they finish their. acting class give the performance of. their life they didn't go work their. catering job that's every actor that's. what I heard everybody in La is an actor. crying on command and they're just like. I was like moved by them then they're. like oh I need to go work at the coffee. shop now it's crazy it's so competitive. so I'm not on skill level but. they're so positive to you and they are.
so almost a level of delusion they all. think they're going to make it they all. think their friends are going to make it. and I'm like uh boy so when I piss an. actor off because that particular actor. uh you know she did stand up just once. or twice and she posted a clip online. right and then during the podcast. interview I was like oh so you debled. your hand at stand stand up right and. she said oh yeah yeah yeah it was pretty. bad wasn't it she said that by the way. the actor the actress said that and then. I said yeah yeah it is actually pretty.
bad because she said it this video no no. she can't we can't I think and I I. taught her how to take it down from. YouTube because you know it if you. didn't upload the video yourself you. can't just delete it right under someone. else's Channel but there are ways to do. a issue a takedown request so I thought. I was TR to help you know then she got. upset at me she was like oh your podcast. are supposed to uplift Asian people but. I can't believe you tore me down like. that and embarrassed me from of all a. whole audience I'm like you said it was. bad yourself I didn't come in with like.
yeah your stand up sucks you know and. who cares you're not a standup you're an. actress the video who cares if you're. bad at standup you know and that's only. going to make it more interesting and. maybe because of you mentioning that. that will actually make people want to. go see her um stand up or Open Mic more. no she she doesn't do stand up oh she do. just's an actress she's just very very. I'm not going to tell people who she is. but she's been in some big shows you. know so I thought you know I don't know.
I I think she's never heard that she's. never heard a fellow actor or actress. tell her that he stand up's not very. good right so yeah so that's how I. pissed an actor off actress off year. years and years I don't even remember. this memory now but you're you just. brought brought up this this up for me. yeah CU you you mentioned that and then. um you guys were talking about that's. why you think internet is better for you. instead of the TV industry oh well yes I.
I agree well I think TV across the board. is declining a little bit in terms of. viewership and I heard this really. interesting thing where in in the old. days we were growing up like are we. about the same age you thing I'm 31 31. 33 okay about the same age so when we. were growing up we have these like TV. appointment viewings right every week. every Sunday you tune in to watch. Friends for instance or any any show. once a week you tune in so you over the. years you develop this relationship with. the people on TV M but nowadays that's.
been replaced by YouTube every Sunday I. tune in to watch you know my favorite. food Creator Nick djan josa Weisman. every Wednesday peggo show yeah peggo. show every Wednesday like comment. subscribe and don't tell her to start at. only fans is there only fans in in. Taiwan people do that okay great it's it. reached here as well so yeah that has. been replaced by YouTube and podcasting. right right so there's a decline in TV. viewership uh and then also because the. Netflix streaming model right in the old.
days TV was paid for by ads right and. ads are pretty lucrative because every. episode you make an episode you get paid. a lot of AD money but Netflix streamer. the streamer model you everybody just. pays a fixed fixed price once a month. and you can watch as many shows as you. want like $6.99 9.99 a month and there's. less money in there now so there's a. whole shrinking of the industry right. now so right that's why why would you. want to and UK TV also is the same. shrinking and I like why would I want to. fight and compete for this shrinking pie.
where the internet is about as infinite. as you you want it to be right plus my. sense of humor leans it's very Global. you know it's not very British you know. and I think I can reach people compared. to the average British comedian I can. reach people in taipe I can reach people. in Toronto that the British comedian. can't reach so I was thinking to myself. why I fight over that shrinking pie I. can do my own thing yeah when did you. think um that you pick up this sense of. humor being more sarcastic because that.
is not typical Malaysian oh is it not. sense I don't know that's my question I. think some people are like that we're. still Asian after all we still talk a. lot of complain oh we love. complaining so that's that's where humor. com I guess complaining uhhuh I think I. picked that up from my mom she she she's. she's she know sort to complain in an. entertaining way she'll pick me out from. school one hour drive back she be. talking the whole way solo I just sit. next to her those in and out she just be. complaining about about the new domestic.
the maid she has her friends gossiping. about this relative who got a divorce. who got an abortion you know even if you. don't answer she can just oh wow it's. great she's like the original Joe Rogan. my mom is Joe Joe Rogan does the first. podcaster ever wow every day so I think. that kind of seeped into my brain a. little bit you know that's you you'll. become that one day you you you'll. become that one day hopefully not I. don't want to do that to my kids but you. said that they went to your special when.
you were in Malaysia right but they. didn't really get um why is a funny uh. my special right your parents oh I think. my my dad doesn't speak English that. well so he came to the show he said oh. it's very funny son but I didn't. understand a word you were saying uh. when other people laughed I laughed with. them you know right right that kind of. thing it's but and surprisingly Uncle. Roger was the only thing that they. really got because Uncle Roger speaks. English in their way right right the. accent closer to them the words are. simpler mhm uh so yeah I'm glad this.
this this character took off it it. reaches more people so are you planning. on coming back anytime soon hopefully. man hopefully I open a restaurant here. right open a branch here that would be. great rice restaurant I've tasted so. much fried rice here already our lunch. was just like five plates of fried rice. taste testing I had fried rice yesterday. I had fried rice on the day I land it. you know and I I I think I'm getting a. sense of Taiwanese fried rice now you. guys use short grain rice you know think. tyone style right and most of the time. it's a little bit blander than I would.
like it that but that's objective of. course um but today we had a really good. one with like walk a nice Char dryer. righto curo ohuro is the best that. should be your National thing not not it. should. be right wait um at some places we even. have for some pizza places they even. have shuro pizza sh pizza oh I got to. try that I have to look it up I send the.
restaurant to. you I'll have a look where do they have. it nice cuz that's also one thing that. my boyfriend likes uhhuh churo he. doesn't Illinois Illinois Illinois yeah. Midwestern white guy like centuro yes. wow yeah cuz it's there's not a lot of. Taiwanese food that he enjoys but he. really likes churo and like l f yeah F. too and and and. uh the little balls of sweet potato. balls Tio.
Oho okay but tonging tonging tonging the. one that you just had that's Tong no. difference okay okay that's good I like. that one's a little bit more crispy the. other one's more chunky okay I like I I. like all those things all the skewers. uh is that is that how you say it. okay uh we say it in Taiwanese yeah some.
people said it's hwen but it's kind of. yeah I grew up I'm hawen ancest I'm my. anry is H I can understand it do you. speak hin uh t t t oh that's what you. say yeah we said t t oh a little I don't. speak I understand it though that's. that's the really funny thing because. when I was in international school we. also have some um Chinese students. sometimes when they want to talk in. their dialect they thought that people. don't understand and then I'll turn. around and I'll answer and they'll be. all freaked out like holy.
and their dialect would be what. there similar they're from I think um. shanto shantong yeah I don't know where. shanto is but they have some not all of. them is the same but some words and kind. of like what you just said not exactly. the same but I can pick up I see I see. cool cool I think that's really. interesting it would have been cool if I. came studied here my life have been so. different that's a path to Jen in. Malaysia a lot of them come to Taipei.
you know or or China or Taiwan we have a. lot of Malaysian exchange students or. like um University students here yeah. yeah that would have been if I got a. scholarship to uh the us but if I didn't. this would be the. pathol different different different. life so you only moved to the states. when um you went to University yeah when. I was 20 did you have a huge culture of. shock when you first moved there yeah. yeah it was it was it was bad man it was. uh everything was different nobody.
nobody eats out that much every eating. out is so expensive uhuh right in the US. oh and it's not as like in Malaysia. things are very casual you know you just. you don't even make plans with friends. you just text them after school after. work hey you want to get something to. eat and you just say yes you just go MH. over in the US is more UK even worse but. in us there's a lot of planning or to. plan oh how about next Tuesday there you. go you to follow up the day off oh are. you still all good for later today. you know you try to you may you've lived. in the west before right you've made.
plans W okay you no but you get what say. Yeah in Asia it's all very casual and. then they mix friend groups MH like like. later I'm getting dinner with them and. then they ask you want to come like yeah. cool bring more than marrier but in the. UK he would say hey I'm throwing this. small get together with my school. friends would you like to come and she. said oh I don't no no no thanks I don't. want to impose it's like come on I don't. have time to hang out with you oneon-one. just come. chill all together yeah I don't have. time to to take a one hour bus ride to.
your house and and sit there and just do. boring that's calm so it's more. it's more things are more casual in Asia. I don't know why the formality there uh. the UK is even worse because they're all. very uh very formal very polite a little. bit don't don't they don't say what. they're thinking you know they if they. don't like you they'll be like huh if. don't like something they won't say. that's bad they'll say oh that's. interesting you. know so yeah that that that's what they.
say I guess you don't have a lot of. British friends I I I have a a few I. would say most of them I met through. work okay you know I don't know how you. meet friends outside of work British. friends they have their own school. friends University friends and they hang. out with them their whole lives I feel. like that's kind of it's very hard to. penetrate into their Social Circle okay. how how long did you live there in. Britain 8 years years years that's a. long time yeah yeah how come you didn't. try to get out of there like move to the.
states or something wa it's hard to move. to the States you got to get a visa and. stuff it's hard to get a Visa we got a. and right now I'm an artist Visa but. that's because unia blew up so I I got. enough credit Street credit to to apply. for the artist visa and in the UK I was. doing my standup I was getting good I. was trying to get better at it slowly. slowly got good and started getting paid. and went full-time and then Co happened. but don't you need visa in in the UK. yeah I I had one I was married to a. European woman before so that was ages.
ago okay okay dumb stuff divor German. woman yeah yeah wow you really did your. research they're all right Germans. they're all right I like that they they. travel and like to see the world MH but. they can be you know a little a little. stiff too so yeah yeah all right not. great okay so thank you for coming thank. you for joining us today yeah enjoy this. that was great thank you yeah bye bye. bye.
