At this hour, more than 800 fires are burning in Canada. alone, that smoke now making its way into the U.S., the haze. over the Midwest and now the Northeast in the coming hours. Tonight here are the stunning images of a train surrounded. by flames in Ontario, the crew calling for an. emergency rescue. The thick smoke in Michigan, bridge traffic disappearing into. the haze, authorities reducing. We're in the middle of the night. In New York City tonight, the statue of liberty barely. visible through the smoke. Niagara Falls in an orange glow, just stunning. And late today, a storm sweeping through New York City, the.

city in darkness for a time during the storms and this haze. Lee Goldberg standing by with the forecast for us. And ABC's Matt Rivers leads us off with the images tonight. >> Tonight, dangerous smoke from wildfires in Canada. blanketing the upper Midwest and northeast with thick, hazy air. The sky's bright orange. Air quality alerts now up for millions of people in more than. a dozen states, from Boston to New York. Officials warning that with the smoke and dangerous heatwave,

people should limit their time outdoors. In Michigan, the famed Five Mile Mackinac Bridge disappearing. into the haze, officials reducing speeds to. 20 miles an hour. Earth cam video showing Niagara Falls enveloped. in an orange cloud. Smoke also pouring in from multiple fires. burning in Minnesota's Superior National Forest. The evacuation orders came and we kicked off that plan. Scouts on a canoe trip forced to evacuate with. their food and supplies. Those fires and over 800 more raging in Canada.

This is getting a little scary. Terrifying video out of Ontario capturing an apocalyptic. scene, flames surrounding a freight train. Amazingly, the crew on board were not hurt. Seriously, we're encased in flames now. In the path of all that smoke, Toronto's air quality ranking. the worst worldwide among major cities. David, those wildfires again creating these hazy, almost. apocalyptic-like images across The U.S. is in a very bad situation. from that bridge there in Michigan to scenes like.

these in upstate New York. Officials are advising everyone to take extra precautions to. brace for worsening conditions. It may only get hazier. >> We can see the skyline right behind you. But firstly, this dangerous smoke and these storms. late today in New York City. >> The skies are so muddy in New York City right now, David. I mean, it's air that you can wear and taste. And then it became a triple threat with severe storms this.

afternoon in New York City with heavy downpours and. gusty winds temporarily clearing out the smoke. But it's coming back big time. These storms, of course, fueled by the heat. And of course, the heavy smoke will actually take down. temperatures tomorrow here. But the smoke is worse. The worst smoke tonight is across Minnesota and. Wisconsin, northern Michigan. That heavy smoke and poor air quality, it's coming back into. the northeast, Philly, New. >> Good morning, everyone.

And as Lee mentioned, this emergency unfolding. in Texas at this hour. We do remain on the scene tonight of these. life-threatening floods. Dramatic water rescues underway right now and a confirmed. tornado touching down in San Antonio. Faith Abubey in Texas tonight. Tonight, swift water rescue boats out in force, roads washed out and towns cut off amid multiple.

The incident coming just days after the military suspended. eight Apache helicopter pilots for this flyover.

Passengers seen clinging to the side of their boat as. it capsized near Alcatraz. One person was killed and three more passengers. are still missing. It looks like multiple people are in the water, typically unconscious. People are trapped in the boat. Twenty people were on board that boat for a memorial. service yesterday afternoon. Most of them family. What it does appear is that the vessel took a wave and.

was listing heavily and lost a little bit of stability and. then it quickly rolled over. Three level cabin cruisers sending up a distress. signal taking on water. We just started yanking people out. People were either frantically, you know, because we were. going in and out with our boat, they were either super. frantic and we just had to grab them and, you know, look. "I was like, 'Look at my face. Look at me in the eyes. I'm not going to let you go.'". Justin Marceline was one of the fishermen who raced in alongside. the Coast Guard, describing the trapped passengers as the.

boat sunk beneath the surface. "It was like Titanic in real life. I mean, there was stuff everywhere. People were banging on the glass. So I was telling everybody to try to break it.". Sixteen passengers were rescued, but officials. have now identified the person killed as 79-year-old. Clifford Joseph Boysa and search and rescue teams. scoured the area for 24 hours hoping to find those. three people unaccounted for. Is there any chance those three people missing are. still alive? Well we always hold out hope right. that's why we're still searching.

And David the Coast Guard says they're gonna. continue searching the bay here until sunset tonight. and if they don't find those three missing passengers. by then this will be a recovery mission. Police swarming this Kroger in Cyprus.

just before three o'clock local time. The gunfire. >>> We heard a round fired, we heard another I think a. couple rounds fired, it was like at least two or three, and. then everybody booked it out, like everybody just started. like running. >>> We'll have two coming out of bakery. >>> We just had two civilians come out of the freezer. >>> Patrick Young was a few aisles away. >>> Then I heard pop, and there was a pause, and then I heard. pop, pop, pop, and by that time everyone was running. I left my medication and I just ran. And then I came out here and.

people were driving up and I was like, active gunman, you. know, go, don't come in here. At least two people were transported in critical. condition, one of them flown to the hospital by. helicopter. And tonight police say one of those. victims could be the shooter. And the early read, David, is this was a dispute. between those two men who are now in the hospital. David? But just 24 hours after ICE ordered a pause to most traffic. stops after ICE agents killed two drivers, one in Maine, another in Texas, President Trump is reversing course. A source tells ABC News the president overturned the order. Today posting, "We cannot give up one of ICE's most important. and effective crime-fighting tools, the traffic stop, telling ICE to be judicious, fair and smart and go back and. do your very important job.".

Tonight, Johan Guerrero's sister demanding justice, saying. her brother never got into trouble and was. devoted to his family.
